THE
National Committee for Solidarity with Cuba called for year long programmes in
different parts of the country, as part of the observance of the 50th
anniversary of the Moncado uprising. July 26 is a special day in the life of the
Cuban people and while the 49th anniversary was being observed in Delhi and
elsewhere, the call for year long programmes was given.
At
a well attended function in New Delhi on July 26, CPI(M) general secretary
Harkishan Singh Surjeet stressed that Cuba had shown to the world how even a
cruel economic blockade could not change the course of history.
It has not only turned the corner but sustained itself at very critical
periods such as after the collapse of the Soviet Union.. He reminded the
audience that presently even the US Congress was having a partial change of
heart, amidst growing opposition to the blockade within USA.
Among
the speakers were A B Bardan, general secretary of CPI, A Vijayaraghvan, CPI(M)
MP and convenor, Solidarity Committee on Cuba, and M A Baby former convenor of
solidarity committee.
The
theme ‘We salute Cuba’ echoed from the start of the function with songs from
Cuba and India. The function also saw a play on imperialism.
