SPECIAL ISSUE
ON June 21, 1977, the people
of West Bengal for the first time elected the Left Front government with a
thumping majority. And there has been no looking back ever since. In 2001, the
people of the state wrote a new chapter in the history of democracy for the
first time ever in the world, a front was voted in to office to lead a
government for the sixth time running.
What is even more astounding is that on each of these six occasions, the front
has got a majority of two-thirds of the total seats in the Assembly. And on each
of the six occasions, the leading party of the front, the CPI (M), has got a
majority in the Assembly on its own as well. The fact that this feat was
performed by the Left Front proves that the government has vigorously pursued
pro-people policies. In return, the workers, peasants, other working people, and
the intelligentsia of the state have reposed their trust in the CPI (M)-led Left
Front and returned it to office with handsome margins every time around.
June 21, 2002 will mark the
completion of 25 years of existence of the pro-people LF government in office.
To commemorate this momentous occasion, People’s
Democracy, the organ of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is bringing
out a special issue on June 23, 2002. People’s
Democracy has been published uninterruptedly for the last 26 years. It is
read by progressive people across the country, and in 25 other countries as
well. It is being published from three centres – New Delhi, Kolkata and
Hyderabad. The total readership of the weekly is more than 100,000 for normal
issues. The readership of special issues is always substantially higher.
This special issue will carry
articles by Harkishan Singh Surjeet (General Secretary, CPI [M]), Jyoti Basu
(the longest serving Chief Minister of any government in the world, and Polit
Bureau member of the CPI [M]), Buddhadev Bhattacharjee (Chief Minister, West
Bengal), Biman Bose (Chairman, Left Front), Anil Biswas (Polit Bureau member of
the CPI [M]), and a number of other distinguished leaders, commentators,
academics and scholars.
