Uttarpara
Bypoll: LF Registers Impressive Win
THE
CPI(M) candidate of the Bengal Left Front, Jyotikrishna Chattopadhyay has been
able to wrest the Uttarpara assembly seat from the Trinamul Congress by a margin
of 16,178 votes, winning 49.33 per cent of the valid votes.
The by-election to the Uttarpara seat was held because the seat had
fallen vacant following the death of the sitting Trinamul Congress MLA. In the
2001 assembly polls, the Left Front had lost this seat by a narrow margin of
1,738 votes. Jyotikrishna Chattopadhyay was the candidate then also.
From
Delhi, where the central committee meeting of the CPI(M) was in progress, Bengal
chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Anil Biswas, the state secretary of the
CPI(M), and the Bengal Left Front chairman, Biman Basu extended their
felicitations to the people for ensuring a big win for the Left Front in the
by-election. They hailed the
victory as an indictment of the anti-people policies of the BJP-led NDA
government. The win also points to the people’s trust in the policies of the
Left Front and its government.
