Releases Candidates’ List For Howrah Civic Polls
THE Bengal Left Front has released the list of its candidates for the Howrah civic polls scheduled to be held on November 30. The Left Front runs the board of the present Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC). Situated across the Ganges River, the sprawling industrial township of Howrah is often called the ‘twin city’ of Kolkata.
In
the 50-ward HMC, the Left Front has put up candidates in 49, leaving one seat to
the Janata Dal (Secular). Of the LF
candidates, the CPI(M) is contesting in 36 seats, the Forward Bloc in six, the
CPI in three, the RSP in two, and the RCPI in two.
The
Left Front has put up 30 fresh faces in the candidates’ list and 25 of them
belong to the CPI(M). The Left
Front has nominated 23 women candidates, and of them CPI(M) has fielded 16, the
Forward Bloc four, the CPI two, and the RCPI one. In all, 17 seats in the HMC are reserved for women.
In running the election campaign, the Left Front would give emphasis to a house-to-house drive in the run up to the polls. Two central rallies have been announced, one to be held at the Salkia Sammilani Park and the other at the Dumurjala maidan. Chief Minister of Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee would be the principal speaker at both meetings, informed Anil Biswas, CPI(M) state secretary.
