Left Front Wins Howrah Civic Polls
IN West Bengal, the Left Front has registered a comprehensive electoral victory in the recently concluded elections to the 50-seat Howrah municipal corporation, winning 74 per cent of the wards. The Left Front has won the Jhargram municipal elections too, while the Pradesh Congress has retained Krishnagar and Behrampore. The Trinamul Congress-BJP combine has suffered a major setback in these civic elections.
The polls remained peaceful.

The Pradesh Congress won in all the 23 wards in Behrampore.
With the elections to the above three municipalities/corporations, six wards of six municipalities also went in for civic by-elections at the same time. Of these, the CPI(M) candidates of the Left Front have won three wards --- Gobordanga in North 24 Parganas, Konnagar in Hooghly and Alipurduar in Jalpaiguri districts. The remaining three wards went to the opposition with the Pradesh Congress-Trinamul Congress combine winning in Rampurhat (Birbhum), the Pradesh Congress emerging victorious at Murshidabad, and the Trinamul Congress winning in Bolpur (Birbhum).
