COMRADE HIREN MUKHERJEE
THE
central committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) express its deep
grief at the death of Comrade Hiren Mukherjee. He was aged 97. Born in a middle
class family of Kolkata in 1907 Comrade Hiren Mukherjee was a brilliant student
of history both in the country and abroad. He joined the freedom struggle during
his student days and became a member of the Communist Party in 1936. He was
imprisoned in 1940-41 and again in 1948-49. He was elected as a member of the
West Bengal Provisional Committee of the Party in 1947 and became a member of
the national council of the Party in 1958. He was elected to the Lok Sabha five
times between 1952 and 1971 from Kolkata North-East.
His
versatile talent and his grasp of scientific socialism found expression in his
books. He was a powerful orator, a
parliamentarian and a History teacher.
Comrade
Hiren Mukherjee made an important contribution to the defence of scientific
socialism till he breathed his last. He had always been vociferous against the
dilution of scientific socialism during the Gorbachev period and the
unhistorical assessment of Comrade Stalin. He died with the firm conviction of
the final victory of scientific socialism.
He
worked and wrote with tireless energy despite his old age and failing health.
His large number of books and articles in popularising Marxist ideas earned him
all round appreciation.
He
was one of the founders of the Progressive Writers Association and the founder
president of Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). He was also
associated with some trade union organisations.
The
central committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) pays its respectful
homage to the memory of Comrade Hiren Mukherjee, who devoted his entire life to
the cause of the toiling people and the advance of the forces of socialism.
The
Party conveys its heartfelt sympathy and condolence to his family.
