Cuba Obtains Overwhelming Support For Resolution

CUBA obtained overwhelming support in the UN General Assembly on November 8, where 182 countries passed a resolution calling on the US government to immediately end the economic and commercial blockade of the island.

Of the 191 countries represented in the UN General Assembly, only four voted against the resolution (The United States, Israel, Palau and the Marshall Islands) and one abstained (Micronesia), EFE reports.

This is the 14th occasion on which Cuba has presented a resolution calling for an end to the commercial blockade, but it has never won such strong support.

Since the first motion was presented in 1992 the support had been increasing, and last year received the support of 179 countries.

The resolution adopted, which is not of a binding nature, demands the lifting of the blockade of Cuba and to stop imposing measures designed to intensify it.
