Nepal Struggle Reaches Critical Stage

Harkishan Singh Surjeet, chairman of the Nepal Democracy Solidarity Committee India issued the following statement on April 19, 2006

THE popular struggle in Nepal for the restoration of democracy has reached a critical stage. At this moment all those who cherish democratic values in the subcontinent and in the world must extend their unstinted support to the Nepalese people in this decisive stage of the struggle.

The 12-point agreement reached between the seven parties and the Maoists in Nepal is a significant development. The Maoists on their part have publicly assured that they shall renounce the gun and join the political process if republican democracy is established in Nepal. For this, it is necessary that the Constituent assembly be elected through which the people of Nepal can decide upon the contours of a democratic republic for their country in the future.

The Nepal king must realise that the urge for democracy cannot be suppressed any further.

I wish the struggle all success and once again reiterate the unstinted support and solidarity of the Indian people with their Nepali brethren. (INN)
