PB Condemns Repression
The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following statement on October 17, 2006
THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the repression unleashed by the state government and administration on the farmers’ movement in Sriganganagar district of Rajasthan.
In Gharsana, the police brutally lathicharged those assembled to march to the office of the sub divisional magistrate. A number of people have been injured including a woman leader. Army has been deployed and curfew imposed. It is shocking that the BJP government is utilising the army against the farmers struggle.
For a week now, the peasantry and the local people have been agitating for the implementation of the agreement to supply water for the Rabi crop from the Indira Gandhi canal. Instead of meeting the legitimate demand of the farmers, the state government has sought to suppress the movement.
The Polit Bureau demands that the state government immediately hold talks after releasing all the leaders who have been held and take steps to implement the agreement already arrived at. (INN)
