UNI Takeover: Karat & Bardhan Meet PM

Prakash Karat, general secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), and A B Bardhan, general secretary of Communist Party of India met the prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh on November 7 to discuss the UNI matter.

The two leaders urged the central government to intervene to stop the takeover of UNI by a single media company. They had earlier written to the prime minister regarding the necessity to maintain the character of the UNI under Section 25 of the Companies Act. They urged the prime minister to find ways to help turn around the UNI so that they can function as an effective news agency.

The prime minister informed the Left leaders that he is awaiting a report from the I & B minister to decide how to act on the matter.
