On Quake Deaths & Destruction

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following statement on September 19, 2011.

THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) expresses its deep shock at the destruction and loss of lives suffered due to the powerful earthquake centred in Sikkim and which has affected the neighbouring areas of North Bengal, Bihar and Nepal. More than 25 people have been reported dead so far and the casualties are expected to mount.

The maximum damage has been caused in Sikkim. All efforts should be made to mount rescue and relief operations and to restore communications in the affected areas. The disaster management teams and the army are being deployed for the rescue work. India should extend assistance to Nepal if required.

The Polit Bureau conveys its heartfelt condolences to the families of all those who have lost their lives in this calamity.
